Dr. Steven Palmer was one of 109 new Canada Research Chairs announced today by The Honourable Maxime Bernier, minister of industry and minister responsible for the Canada Research Chairs Program. With the position he will receive $100,000 per year in research funds for a period of five years. According to Palmer, epidemics are dangerous times for social harmony, as evidenced by public reaction during the SARS crisis. "Canada has a lot to learn, from it own and that of its historically multi-ethnic Latin American neighbours, about effective health communication during epidemic outbreaks," said Palmer. "SARS showed us that an increasingly multi-cultural Canada needs to develop better health communication strategies for epidemics that are already visible on the horizon." Palmer’s work looks at how public health professionals in other countries have successfully communicated their lifesaving message to frightened communities while overcoming the challenges of language barriers, different medical beliefs and fear of government authorities. "Some of these case studies have happy endings - there are a number of things we can learn. We need to have an inclusive health infrastructure and work at getting our most vulnerable populations involved in health education." According to Minister Bernier, CRC funding recognizes the vital contribution of university research to the lives of all Canadians. "The important investments made in university research have re-energized our campuses and given the country’s top researchers - our Canada Research Chairs - the support they need to fully realize their innovative ideas," she said. Palmer is the 12th University of Windsor professor to be named a Canada Research Chair. - 30 - CONTACT: Lori Koutros Manager, News Services University of Windsor (519) 973-7001 Cell: (519) 564-9908
