http://www.trentu.ca/news/pressreleases/060403jkeyser.htm Renowned Rock Art Expert to Deliver Annual Joan Vastokas Distinguished Lecture in Art and Archaeology Trent University is pleased to announce that Dr. James Keyser, a pioneer in North American rock art research, will be delivering the annual Joan Vastokas Distinguished Lecture in Art and Archaeology on Tuesday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the First Peoples Performance Space, Room 101 at Gzowski College on the Symons campus. His presentation is entitled "Bear Gulch Rock Art: The Origins of Narrative Art". Dr. James Keyser is a professional archaeologist and well-known international expert on prehistoric rock art. His special area of interest is in the rock art of the plains and prairies and his extensive work includes studying the petroglyphs at Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park, along the Milk River in Alberta. He is author and co-author of several books, including Art of the Warriors: Rock Art of the American Plains and the beautifully illustrated Plains Indian Rock Art, which he co-authored with Michael Klassen, a Trent University graduate. Dr. Keyser has just recently retired from a long career with the American Forest Service in Portland Oregon. The Art and Archaeology lecture, which showcases distinguished speakers whose research and writing cut across archaeology and art history, is held on an annual basis in honour of Joan Vastokas, Professor Emeritus at Trent.
