April 4, 2006 Source: : http://communications.uvic.ca/releases/release.php?display=release&id=712 Still Time to Apply For Admission More than 1,000 secondary school students already have conditional offers of admission to the University of Victoria this fall through its online, self-reporting grades option. But more student spaces funded by the provincial government at UVic mean there are still opportunities for secondary school students graduating with an admission average of 75 per cent or higher to submit an application for several faculties and programs. UVic was the only university in B.C. to give eligible grade 12 secondary school students the opportunity to apply for conditional acceptance and a $1,000 scholarship last fall if their grade 11 marks in required courses averaged 90 per cent or higher. Of the 2,900 eligible students who applied online since the fall, nearly 2,000 have been offered conditional admission. Of these, around 400 have received $1,000 entrance scholarships towards their UVic studies and may be eligible for an increase to $2,000 or higher based on marks in required grade 11 and 12 subjects. "Early self reporting has been a great success, surpassing our expectations," says UVic’s vice president academic Jamie Cassels, "but we are still welcoming applications from students with an admission average of 75 per cent and higher and will be considering them until at least the end of May. We want to ensure that eligible students are aware that the 80 per cent and higher admission averages of the past are no longer required, thanks to government funding of additional spaces." The final admission cut off will likely be around 75 per cent for the faculties of humanities, science, social sciences, and the software engineering and computer science programs. A similar admission average is expected for the department of history in art and the school of health information science. The admission cut off for college transfer students for the humanities, science and social sciences faculties is expected to be C+. UVic is funded for 16,523 full time equivalent undergraduate and graduate students in 2006/07, an increase of 243 FTEs over 2005/06. UVic will determine the final admission cut offs in early May. --30-- Media Contacts: Patty Pitts (UVic Communications) at (250) 721-7656 or ppitts@uvic.ca
