April 4, 2006 Source: : http://www.ucalgary.ca/news/april06/zen.html U of C presents lecture by Zen high priest Zen high priest, professor and internationally acclaimed landscape architect, Reverend Shunmyo Masuno, will present a lecture on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. Masuno, who is known for his unique integration of religious philosophy, art, culture, business and education, will speak about the beauty, mystery and design of the Japanese garden. "Through Zen ascetic practice an emotion of the mind is found that can’t be expressed or understood," says Masuno. Masuno has lectured widely in Japan and North America. He is the author of three books, and his work is featured in print and television. He has undertaken several projects for the Canadian Government, including the Canadian embassy in Tokyo and the Japanese garden at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa. Masuno refers to gardening as his "spiritual training ground" in his quest of a higher understanding of himself. He says his inner feelings and deep emotions, whether positive or negative, are always expressed in his work. Media are invited to attend the free lecture.
