Two Mount A students receive DAAD German scholarships — only 50 available throughout North America

SACKVILLE, NB — Mount Allison University German students Isabel Taylor of Corner Brook, NL and Ilse Kramer of Hamilton, ON will be spending part of their summer in Germany. Both are recipients of scholarships from the DAAD, the German Government’s Academic Exchange Service. Only 50 scholarships were available to students across North America.

Dr. Peter Edwards, head of modern languages and literatures at Mount Allison says, "We are delighted that Mount Allison students have once again been successful in this scholarship competition, especially because only 50 are awarded for the whole of North America each summer."

Corner Brook, NL resident Isabel Taylor, a third-year history student with minors in German and French, is excited to take part in the program and pursue summer studies in Germany. She plans to study at Tübingen or Freiburg during the month of August. She says, "The application process involves writing pieces in German and English explaining why you want to study in Germany. You also have to submit transcripts, letters of reference, and take a German proficiency test." Isabel plans to pursue her Master’s in history.

Isabel has also been involved in many Mount Allison activities outside the academic realm including the German Club’s Oktoberfest, the Celtic Society, and the Society of All Nations events.

Ilse Kramer of Hamilton, ON will also be heading to Germany this summer. The fourth-year French major (with German and Spanish minors) will be studying in Düsseldorf for two months. She explains, "My program involves an intensive summer school course (25 hours/week) studying German in an immersion environment. During this time I will be living with a German family as well as taking classes."

It’s not all language studies for this tri-lingual student at Mount Allison though. Ilse has had a busy four years, participating in many extra-curricular activities on campus over the years, including Windsor Theatre, CHMA (Mount Allison’s campus radio), Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, Leadership Mount Allison, and the le Cercle français — just to name a few.

As for life after Mount A, Isle plans to work internationally for an NGO, a Canadian embassy, or for the UN.

Both students would like to thank Dr. Thilo Joerger, Dr. Rainer Hempel, and Dr. Renata Schellenberg for all the help and encouragement that they have given them during their German studies at Mount Allison. Isabel and Ilse join a long line of Mount Allison students who have received DAAD scholarships to study overseas.
