August 18, 2006 Source: : http://www.brocku.ca/webnews/displaystory.phtml?TEMPLATE=template.html&sid=1513 South African HIV/AIDS activist to speak at Brock On Monday, Aug. 21, at 12 noon, at Brock University, in Thistle 254, Ashraf Mohammed, a leading South African HIV/AIDS activist, will give a talk on the HIV/AIDS crisis in South Africa and review some of the work being done in schools and universities to combat the pandemic. Mohammed's visit to the University follows his appearance at the International AIDS Conference in Toronto, Ont. Mohammed is currently the Program Manager of the HIV/AIDS Program Unit at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town, South Africa. The unit, which he established, has become a pioneer in the development of HIV/AIDS programs in the Cape region, especially in educational institutions and prisons. Apart from his work at the HIV/AIDS program, Mohammed is also a lecturer in microbiology and community health care, and has published widely in both areas. He has been the recipient of a number of international awards for his research and holds degrees from the University of Gujarat (India), the University of the Western Cape (South Africa) and is about to complete his PhD at the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa).
