Teaching English to non-English speakers is a complex process. Brock's TESL program provides students with a background in theories and methodologies relevant to the learning and teaching of English as a subsequent language. TESL students learn about first- and second-language acquisition, the structure of English, language testing and methodologies for teaching specific language skills. Practice teaching is an essential feature of this program and a four-year co-op option is also available. Institutions offering TESL programs and wishing TESL Ontario recognition are required to demonstrate high standards of academic excellence and professional integrity in their programs. TESL Ontario recognizes adult ESL teacher education programs within the province and promotes clearly articulated standards of practice and conduct within the profession. Graduates of institutions whose TESL programs are recognized for the quality of their academic and professional standards are then eligible for professional certification, which in turn gives teachers access to positions in ESL programs that receive funding from the Ontario government and institutions that value excellence in ESL teaching.
