Nipissing Grad uses book to give to community

North Bay, ON, June 27, 2006 — Kristin Taylor, a Nipissing University graduate and writer, is giving back to her community using the proceeds of her recently published novella, The Other Side of Happiness.

Taylor, an Innisfil resident who graduated from Nipissing’s English Studies program in 2004, is donating 20 per cent of the sales of her book to Rainbows Canada, a non-profit organization offering a peer support program to children, youth and adults in the Barrie area who have experienced grief.

Providing support for Rainbows was a natural decision for the twenty-three year old writer, whose novella covers many of the topics dealt with in the Rainbows peer support program.

"I wanted to give something back to the community," said Taylor. "And I also wanted to dispel some common stereotypes about broken relationships. It’s easy to pass judgment on others, but until you’ve lived through grief and loss, you have no idea the kind of complexities that can propel or destroy relationships."

The Other Side of Happiness was published in 2005 by Barrie Press. It grew out of an in-class assignment Taylor wrote while a student at Nipissing University. The story examines a series of complex and shifting relationships revealed in the first person by various characters, giving the reader a glimpse into the many diverging viewpoints that constitute a relationship.

"I would never have published this without the support and encouragement of my fellow Nipissing graduates," said Taylor. "From day one at Nipissing I was challenged to chase my dreams and to believe that anything was possible. I still cannot believe that I have already published my first book! Nipissing University is definitely a school that fosters individual success."

The Other Side of Happiness can be ordered directly from the author by e-mailing her at kristin_mariet@yahoo.ca. The cost is $10.00.
