A Life debuts at the Vancouver Fringe Festival on Friday, September 15, at 8 p.m. at the Fletcher Challenge Theatre at SFU Downtown. Colby, a founding member of SFU Surrey’s Explorations in the Arts and Social Sciences program, began writing and producing theatrical productions as a high school student living on B.C.’s Gabriola Island. Over six years, her showmanship helped raise $50,000 for youth literacy and seniors projects in her community, and earned her a full scholarship to university. Committed to "breaking down barriers between the academic world and the community at large," Colby wrote her upcoming Fringe show to share the remarkable life and literary contribution of modernist poet Hilda Doolittle with a broad audience. Doolittle, an American who rejected the constraints of Victorian culture for a life of personal and poetic experimentation, counted Ezra Pound and D.H. Lawrence among her intimates. Colby’s play blends Doolittle’s biting humour, biography, and poetry to reveal the woman and her words over a span of 30 years. Colby plans to donate proceeds from the performance to a cultural fund for Explorations students at SFU Surrey.
