New Employee Orientation and Barbecue 2006

BRANDON, MB - Brandon University's New Employee Orientation 2006 will take place on Tuesday, August 29, and Wednesday August 30. All new faculty and staff members are encouraged to join us for information on navigating the university and Brandon, introductions, sessions on the library, student services, research, unions, and everything else you'll need to know to get started at BU. And don't forget the special barbecue hosted by BU President Louis P. Visentin at the University House! Read on for a full agenda:

8:45 a.m. - Meet and Greet

9:00 a.m. - Welcome and Introductions of New Employees and Opening Remarks: Dr. Louis Visentin, President and Vice-Chancellor

"It’s all about being engaged"

9:45 a.m. - University Governance: Mr. Jake Janzen, Chair, Board of Governors; Dr. Janet Wright, Acting Executive Dean of Student and International Affairs/University Registrar

This session will explain the different roles of the University’s Senate and Board of Governors.

10:00 a.m. - Life in Brandon: Your New Home: Dr. Doug Ramsey, Rural Development; Dr. Sterling Evans, History; Dr. Mark Berry, Science

Hearing stories from recently hired employees is often helpful to learn about life on campus and in the City. This panel of recently hired faculty will share tips on surviving your first year or two at the Brandon University. They can answer questions about what you can expect from your first few years, how to navigate the university, and how to get to know the city.

11:00 a.m. - Experiencing the Student: Mr. Greg Gatien, Music; Ms. Sheilagh Grills, Student Services

This presentation will provide information on the demographics and issues associated with an open access university.

11:30 a.m. - Sexual Harassment Awareness: Dr. Patrick Morrissette, Sexual Harassment Advisor; Ms. Roberta Graham, Sexual Harassment Advisor; Mrs. Barbara Smith, Human Resources

12:00 p.m. - Lunch (provided in Room 212)

12:45 p.m. - Effective Teaching: Paola Di Muro, Mathematics & Computer Science/Student Services; Di Brandt, English

This presentation will provide personal accounts and best practices on effective teaching methods for both large and small class sizes.

1:15 p.m. - The Administrative Side of Research: Granting agencies, proposals, timelines, the BU approach: Ms. Robin Saliba, Research Office; Dr. Austin Gulliver, Dean of Science & Research; Dr. Scott Grills, Dean of Arts & Graduate Studies

This presentation will discuss the research grant internal review process, how the University can assist you in preparing winning grants and research needs, and provide helpful tips on how to avoid potential pitfalls in establishing a research record.

1:45 p.m. - Keeping the Flame Lit: Starting Your Research Career and Keeping it Going: Dr. David Greenwood, Science

This presentation will provide helpful tips on how to avoid potential pitfalls in establishing a research record.

5:00-8:00 p.m. - Barbeque at University House: University House is located at 463-13th Street (the corner of 13th Street and Victoria Avenue, 5 blocks east of the University), and parking is available on 13th street.
