http://www.nipissingu.ca/news/view.asp?ID=20060803 Nipissing University student off to Mexico with Canada Corps Nipissing University Criminal Justice student, Karen Buzzell will be traveling to Merida, Mexico, in order to promote good governance and capacity building thanks to the Canada Corps University Partnership Program. Buzzell was selected for the program after presenting her proposal to the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). She departs for Mexico on Friday, August 25, and will return in January. "I am very excited about this opportunity," said Buzzell, who is entering her third year in Nipissing’s highly-respected Criminal Justice program. "Canada Corps is looking to be involved in countries where there are leaders who wish to promote a style of governance that reflects values similar to those held by Canada, and Mexico fits that bill. In my studies, I’ve learned a lot about the Canadian government as well as the limitations and challenges that other countries face so I’m very eager to be able to apply my knowledge by promoting sound governance. Nipissing University has been very supportive, especially professor Shelley Lechlitner, who has been instrumental to my success throughout this process." Buzzell will be working with Universidad del Mayab (UM), a law school in Merida, to deliver seminars and lead discussions with the UM law students about aspects of democratic governance based on Canadian democratic practices. With the assistance of a law professor at that university, she will form a team of students to develop and deliver presentations on governance to groups of Mayan people in the rural areas outside Merida. Financed by the Canadian International Development Agency, Canada Corps is a way for Canadians to work together to promote good governance and institution building in developing countries. The pilot phase of the Canada Corps University Partnership Program (CCUPP), managed by the Association of Universities and Colleges in Canada (AUCC), allows young people, who are engaged in formal learning, to better understand governance challenges in developing countries and to participate with more experienced mentors in the search for solutions.
