SACKVILLE, NB — "Go for the Garnet and Gold!" — That’s the challenge for Mount Allison University’s incoming class and theme of this year’s Orientation activities. This week Mount A will welcome over 600 new faces to campus and the student-led Orientation committee will keep them busy with a week jam-packed with activities. Eric Matheson, a fourth-year biology student of Moncton, NB, is this year’s Orientation chair. He says, "We’re really excited to welcome our new students and everyone else back to Sackville. With over a week of fun and informative activities planned we’re hoping that all our students will ‘Go for the Garnet and Gold’ and get the year off to a great start." New Dean of Students David Rowland is excited about Orientation Week as well. He says, "The enthusiasm of our Orientation committee is already evident on campus. I’d like to commend Eric and his team for all the hard work they’ve put into organizing the week and welcome all new Allisonians to campus." Mount Allison’s annual Commencement ceremony, being held Thursday, August 31 at 7 p.m., is a regular Orientation Week highlight. Held in Convocation Hall, this formal ceremony allows students, faculty, staff, and community members to officially welcome the incoming class. Mount Allison University President Dr. Robert Campbell will be the speaker at this year’s ceremony. There are also several workshops available to first-year students to help ease the transition to university life. These include sessions on money management, online registration, and taking good notes in university. On Sunday, September 3, Mount Allison alumnus Mark Black will give a special presentation. A grad of 2000, Mark underwent both a heart and lung transplant in 2001 and is now an advocate for organ donation, speaking regularly at public events to raise awareness. Orientation Week will be full of entertainment, both musical and on the sports field. Mount Allison is pleased to present the Toronto band Pilate Speed on September 8. Pilot Speed (formerly known as Pilate) was formed in 1999. The quartet’s debut album was released in 2001, which gathered attention from MapleMusic Recordings who later signed them. Their two full-length albums Caught by the Window and Sell Control for Life’s Speed have since been released on MapleMusic Recordings in 2002 and 2006, respectively. On the sports field, Mountie athletes will be strutting their stuff. Men’s and women’s soccer kicks off the season with games against UNB (September 9) and Memorial (September 10). Mountie Football starts up with a game against Acadia in Wolfville on September 9 and St.F.X comes to Sackville for Homecoming on September 16 at 2 p.m. For a full schedule of sports events please visit http://athletics.mta.ca On Saturday, September 9 students will ‘rise and shine’ for Shinerama, the annual fund raiser held on campuses across Canada in support of Cystic Fibrosis. Students will be out shining shoes, singing, washing cars, and lending a helping hand in the Sackville, the Greater Moncton Area, Shediac, Amherst, and surrounding communities in support of this worthy cause. Many Orientation events are intended for students only, but some are open to the public.
