Chris MacDonald is among a handful of students from around the world chosen for the 2006 China Economic Development Study Program, a unique two-week program that is offered at Beijing University from August 14 to 30. "This is truly an exciting opportunity," says MacDonald during an interview on campus. He will be boarding a flight to China this weekend, and says he is thrilled to have the chance to study abroad with such a prestigious program via the LSE. This is his second visit to China. In the summer of 2004, he spent a good portion of his time in this country on a student exchange program offered through Saint Mary’s. "China is a country that is growing in our globalized world, so it will be a neat experience learning more about the economic development going on there," he says. "The LSE is a well known school, so I am also truly honoured to have been picked for this program," he adds. MacDonald is a fourth year honours student at Saint Mary’s who is earning a dual degree in Arts (Asian Studies) and Commerce (Finance and Economics). While at Beijing University, he and other students will probe a number of areas that encompass China’s economy. "This is a very intense two-week program," he says. "I intend to take what I learn from it and apply it to my honours thesis in economics, which I will start this fall." After completing the program, MacDonald will spend a little extra time in China in order to visit friends and alumni from Saint Mary’s. As well, he is also going camping with friends for two nights at the Great Wall of China. Saint Mary's University is known for its community outreach projects, both in Canada and around the world. Saint Mary's, founded in 1802, is home to one of Canada's leading business schools, a Science Faculty widely known for its cutting-edge research, a comprehensive and innovative Arts Faculty and a vibrant Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. -30- For More Information: Paul Fitzgerald Public Affairs Officer Saint Mary's University, Public Affairs (902) 420.5514 E-mail: paul.fitzgerald@smu.ca www.smu.ca
