SSHRC: English Prof's Shakespeare Project 'Winning Research'

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) has featured English Prof. Daniel Fischlin in the "winning research" section of its national website.

Fischlin heads the Canadian Adaptations of Shakespeare Project (CASP), which includes the largest and most complete website in the world dedicated to showing William Shakespeare's cultural influence on Canada. The project is supported in part by a SHHRC grant.

CASP recently created ‘Speare: The Literacy Arcade Game, a 3D game that fuses the appeal of an arcade game with the goal of improving basic visual and textual literacy by using Shakespeare's works.

In addition, Fischlin and his team have worked closely with Ottawa resident Lloyd Sullivan on researching the history of the Sanders portrait, a painting owned by Sullivan that is thought to depict the playwright at age 39. The portrait is also CASP’s signature image.

The painting is coming to U of G for a special exhibition at the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre from January to May 2007. In celebration, the University, the Stratford Festival, the Guelph Arts Council and the City of Guelph are teaming up to host "Shakespeare — Made in Canada," a series of regional Shakespeare events that will be held for the duration of the exhibit. It will include theatrical and musical performances, exhibitions, a speakers' series and educational programs.
