Hammond Lectures Focus of CBC Radio Program

A CBC Radio program based on the 2004/05 Kenneth Hammond Lectures on Environment, Energy and Resources is set to air Dec. 7 at 9:05 p.m on 89.1 FM.

The program titled "Planetary Health" will examine links between environment and human health, said Prof. Joe Ackerman, associate dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and organizer of the annual lecture series.

"A lot of people are interested in the relationship between environmental conditions and the health of organisms, including humans," said Ackerman. "Environmental conditions do affect humans."

The show, which is part of CBC’s Ideas hosted by Paul Kennedy, will draw on recorded lectures given on campus last March by Prof. Ward Chesworth, Land Resource Science, who discussed sustainable agriculture; Murray McBride of Cornell University (neurodegenerative diseases and the environment); David MacLean of the University of New Brunswick (forests); and Dominique Charron of the Public Health Agency of Canada (climate change).

A book containing the lecture transcripts and commentary by U of G faculty will also be made available through the CBC by calling (416) 205-6010.

For media questions, contact Communications and Public Affairs: Lori Bona Hunt, (519) 824-4120, Ext. 53338, or Rebecca Kendall, Ext. 56982.
