This Friday morning, Dec. 2, University of Calgary professor Dr. Lisa Young will offer her take on how changes to legislation governing political party fundraising will affect the ongoing federal election campaign. In her opinion, the federal government’s political fundraising reforms were a "pre-emptive strike" made in an attempt to avoid the findings of the Gomery Commission. Young, a highly sought political commentator, will discuss how Bill C-24 has drastically altered Canada’s political landscape. "Much of my current research looks at how the bill has completely changed the way political parties are funded. Some of our major political parties have gone from receiving substantial contributions from corporations and trade unions to relying entirely on public funds and contributions from individuals. This change has the potential to alter internal party organization, party policy and even electoral strategy," says Young. Young will join three of her U of C colleagues at Friday’s Research in Action breakfast event. Research in Action will focus on the work of the University of Calgary’s Institute for Advanced Policy Research, an institute established to objectively influence and positively contribute to the development of public policy in Canada. IAPR carries out its mandate by conducting objective high-quality, evidence-based research and then sharing its findings with decision makers, the public, media and other academics. Other researchers presenting their current work include Dr. Ron Kneebone, an economics professor who suggests that debates about government policy are often conducted in an information vacuum, Dr. J. Douglas Hunt, who argues that traffic is one of the most important issues facing cities across Canada and around the world, and Dr. Daphne Taras, who is a member of a federal commission reviewing the country’s labour standards. Friday’s Research in Action is part of an ongoing series of breakfasts to provide insight into the University of Calgary’s key research areas.
