February 13, 2006 Source: Wilfrid Laurier University: http://www.laurierathletics.com/createarticle.asp?ID=2561 Laurier Golden Hawks represent Canada at the Olympics WATERLOO – Two former Golden Hawk athletes are in Torino, Italy for the twentieth Winter Olympic Games. Mississauga’s Cheryl Pounder and Calgary’s Paul Webster have traded in their purple and gold for red and white and are representing Canada in the same sports they competed in while attending Wilfrid Laurier. Pounder, a member of the Golden Hawk women’s hockey program in its infancy stage will join the Canadian women’s hockey team for her second time. At the last Olympics in SalImage 1 from Two Golden Hawks Represent Canadat Lake City, the team finished in first, defeating the United States 3-2 in the gold medal game. The sport of women’s hockey is only in its third season at the Olympics after making its first appearance in 1998. During Pounder’s time as a Golden Hawk she picked up many accolades including being named a four-time OUA All-Star and Golden Hawk Rookie of the Year in 95-96, and Golden Hawk MVP in 97-98. Pounder joined the Golden Hawk women’s hockey coaching staff for the 2004-05 season to assist with strength and conditioning of the athletes who eventually won the National championship. A member of the Canadian Curling Association staff, Paul Webster is making his first trip to the Olympics. Webster was a part of two provincial championships (1994, 1996) for the Golden Hawks during his time in Waterloo. Since then he has moved within the Canadian Curling association and is presently the Assistant National Development Coach and La Releve West Assistant Coordinator. The sport of curling is quite young at the Olympic level as well, only competing in the last four games. The twentieth Winter Olympic Games take place in Torino, Italy from February 10th to 26th.
