Presentations and discussions will highlight five areas of research activity: mineral resources science and engineering; environmental science; regional economic, social, political and cultural development; health issues and underground sciences). Media and the general public are invited to attend a number of on-campus activities. Research activity at Laurentian University has surpassed the $14 million mark, and for the third year in a row Laurentian has been ranked among the top 35 universities in Canada in terms of research activity. These are significant achievements for a university of Laurentian's size. Program of Events: Monday, February 13 until Friday, February 17 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Bowling Alley (first floor of the Arts Building) Displays and presentations by Laurentian researchers Monday, February 13 2006 11:30 a.m. in the J.N Desmarais Library Rotunda Official start of Research Week activities. Reading of proclamation by Deputy Mayor Ron Bradley, followed by a reception honouring recipients of the Canada Foundation for Innovation/Ontario Research Foundation awards and the Premier's Research Excellence Award. 12:00 to 1 p.m. in the Health Science Education Resource Centre (Room 109) Dr. Roger Pitblado, from the department of Geography, will host a lecture entitled "Geographic Distribution of Physicians in Canada: Beyond How Many and Where." 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Tom Davies Square Launch of the Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Program's "City of Greater Sudbury Climate Change Case Study" Presentation of a new project on climate change, led by Laurentian University and involving federal, provincial and municipal governments, Cambrian College , Collège Boréal, and other stakeholders. Refreshments will be served. Tuesday, February 14 2006 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Brenda Wallace Reading Room, located in the J.N. Desmarais Library Faculty Members will present their new publications to the community. A wine and cheese reception will follow. Wednesday, February 15 2006 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Brenda Wallace Reading Room, located in the J.N. Desmarais Library Symposium by Laurentian's graduate students to present their research projects. Thursday, February 16 2006 9:00 a.m. to noon in the Brenda Wallace Reading Room, located in the J.N. Desmarais Library Symposium by Laurentian's graduate students to present their research projects continues 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Health Science Education Resource Centre (Room 109) Dr. Jack Williams, Scientist Emeritus from Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre, will present a lecture entitled "Rural Health Research and what it is to Canada" 7:00 p.m. in the Alphonse Raymond Building auditorium Presentation of a film documentary entitled "Lost in the Woods: Traversing Rural Children's Mental Health Care," by Laurentian's Dr. Hoi Cheu, Department of English. A panel discussion will be held after the film presentation. This documentary is based on the Centre for Rural and Northern Health (CRaNHR) Research. A musical reception will follow in the Alphonse Raymond foyer, featuring Dr. Yoko Hirota, Department of Music.
