Cross-Border Transportation Studies Institute to be created at University of Windsor

The University of Windsor has been awarded one of the prestigious new Ontario Research Policy Chairs endowed by the Provincial Government, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities Chris Bentley announced this morning.

The Ontario Research Chair in Cross-Border Transportation Policy at the University of Windsor will be the centrepiece of a new Cross-Border Transportation Studies Institute.
This institute will allow the university to recruit a top researcher to develop public policy in areas crucial to both the Government of Ontario and Windsor/Essex County. It will capitalize on the university’s research strengths in areas critical to cross-border transportation issues throughout the world and at the Detroit/Windsor border in particular.

"I am delighted that our proposal was successful," said University President Ross Paul. "We are ideally situated to establish this chair and we can offer a wide range of research expertise and experience in interdisciplinary and applied studies to this critical area. I am grateful to the entire team who put this together, led by Dr. Susan McDaniel and consultant Jim Moore. The challenge now is to recruit the best possible candidate to this exciting new post."

This will enable the University of Windsor to play a leading role in developing long-term policy proposals and innovative responses to social, political and economic issues that are absolutely vital to the future of Ontario and the Windsor region. The Chair will be funded by an endowment of more than $3 million and the initial appointment, expected to take effect in 2007, will be for seven years.

The Chair in Cross-Border Transportation Policy, who might come from a number of relevant fields including economics, political science, environmental studies, engineering, operations research or geographic information systems, will lead interdisciplinary inquiries into such policy issues as:

  • trade and traffic flows,

  • cross-border environmental issues,

  • "just-in-time" delivery of motor vehicle parts,

  • border point security and

  • developing integrated transportation hubs for economic development.

The new chair position at the University of Windsor is one of eight awarded by an expert panel to six Ontario universities from among some 35 proposals. The other winning bids are:

    McMaster University

  • Educational policy and at risk students
    Queen’s University
  • Bioethics
    University of Toronto (3)
  • Biomarkers in disease management
  • Health policy and system design
  • Postsecondary education policy and measurement
    University of Waterloo
  • Environmental policy and renewable energy
    York University
  • Economics and cross-cultural studies

The purpose of the chairs is to attract top policy researchers to Ontario universities and to increase significantly their ability to inform public policy through the highest quality of research, inquiry and policy analysis. A comprehensive and thorough international search process will be initiated in the near future.
