February 17, 2006 Source: Brandon University: http://www.brandonu.ca/news/article.asp?A_ID=947 BU Tourism Research Centre to host Rural Tourism Week February 27 to March 3 BRANDON, MB – From February 27th to March 3rd, 2006 the Brandon University Tourism Research Centre will be hosting a Rural Tourism Week on the BU campus. The week will feature a series of activities intended to bring together researchers, government, regional tourism groups, students and any other interested citizens to discuss, learn and plan for rural tourism in southern Manitoba. On Wednesday, March 1st at 7:00 p.m. University of Waterloo Canada Research Chair in Global Change and Tourism Dr. Dan Scott will give a free public lecture titled "Changing the Way We Play: Global Climate Change and Tourism" in the campus Private Dining Room (first floor, McMaster Hall) Dr. Scott will also be participating in undergraduate and graduate classes in the Departments of Geography as well as Rural Development during the week. "Dr. Scott graduated from Brandon University, and is an expert in national park tourism and climate change," says organizer Dr. Chris Malcolm. "It is very exciting to have a Brandon University graduate in such a prestigious research position participate in Rural Tourism Week." Also featured will be a panel discussion titled "Rural and Regional Issues in Tourism", on Wednesday, March 1st from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, also in the Private Dining Room. This panel discussion is open to the public and will provide the opportunity for tourism practitioners, researchers, and other interested citizens to discuss rural tourism issues in south-western Manitoba with experts in the field. The panel will be chaired by Dr. John Everitt, the Christoph Stadel Professor of Geography at Brandon University, and will include Dr. Dan Scott (University of Waterloo), Lois MacDonald (Manager, Brandon Riverbank Development & Tourism Services), Shawna LeFloor (Southwestern Trails Association for Regional Tourism (START), Dr. Doug Ramsey (Brandon University Tourism Research Centre and Travel Manitoba Board Member). John Dietz (Village of Arden), and a representative from Travel Manitoba have also been invited to participate. On March 3rd and 4th Rural Tourism Week will blend into Rural Issues and Insights II, a conference presented by the Brandon University Rural Development Students Association. The conference is open to all students, faculty, professionals and interested members in the community.
