Working Where You Work event to launch UofW wireless initiative

(WINDSOR, ONTARIO, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2005) – The University of Windsor will celebrate the launch of Working Where You Work, its campus-wide wireless initiative, Tuesday, February 21 at 1:30 p.m. in the Commons area of the CAW Student Centre.

The University of Windsor is one of the first universities in Canada to offer Internet access – indoors and out – through the use of a series of wireless access points installed in buildings across campus. Users with the appropriate computer hardware can log on wirelessly from any location on campus provided they have a University of Windsor password and ID.

"It adds a whole new dimension to our campus, one that responds directly to the learning styles of a new generation of students." says University President Ross Paul. "It is another important step forward in building the strongest possible learning-centred environment at Windsor."

Bell Canada was selected by the University to lead this end-to-end wireless network implementation. Bell worked in partnership with Aruba Networks Inc. to deploy a reliable and self-maintaining wireless infrastructure across the campus. The company installed cable and access points before the start of the school year, allowing students wireless access from their dorm rooms beginning in September, 2005. Final access points have recently been completed.

"With wireless network access across the entire campus, students and faculty can stay connected anywhere, anytime," says Rob Turner, Bell Canada. "As a leading provider of Information Communications and Technology (ICT) solutions, this implementation at the University of Windsor is another example of how Bell is enriching the educational experience in Canada."

According to Fran Sanda, spokesperson for Aruba Networks, the company’s Mobile Edge architecture gives staff, students and faculty transparent access to University computing resources and the Internet from anywhere on campus.

"We are proud to be a part of this pioneering initiative using wireless technology to further research and education," Sanda says.

Roger Lauzon, the University of Windsor’s Director of Information and Technology Services has high praise for his IT team in making this initiative a reality.

"This opens up a world of possibilities for our entire campus population," Lauzon says. "Wireless access allows our students and researchers to work in any environment they choose – where and when they choose."
