Kitchener Public Library holds 27th annual Ideas and Issues lecture series. Topic: "How Slot Machines in Ontario Really Work," with Kevin Harrigan, research associate professor, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, UW. Location: Main Library Auditorium, KPL, 85 Queen St. N. There are approximately 20,000 slot machines at race tracks and casinos in Ontario. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation makes money off each and every one of these slot machines. But how do slot machines make money? Harrigan explains what happens when a player pulls the handle. It will show how the slot machine determines whether the play is a win or loss and how the OLGC knows that over time the slot machine will make money. Info: (519) 743-0271, ext. 255.

Hrudey, UW's 2006 TD Canada Trust/Walter Bean Visiting Professor in the Environment, examines drinking water safety in the country, ranging from the Walkerton disaster to the recent Kashechewan reservation evacuation. Despite advances in technology and painful lessons, he says that Canadian governments seem slow to understand how to assure water safety. The TD Canada Trust/Walter Bean Visiting Professorship in the Environment provides students with an opportunity to study with ranking experts active in the fields in which they plan to work. During his stay at UW, Hrudey will be based in the civil engineering department and will give a graduate course in environmental health risk assessment and management, along with several seminars. Contact: Caitlin Cull, (519) 888-4567, ext. 6549.

St. Jerome's Centre for Catholic Experience presents the 2005-2006 John J. Wintermeyer Lecture. Topic: "Lessons from Iraq," with Hans-Christof Graf von Sponeck. Location: Siegfried Hall, St. Jerome's University, UW campus. Graf von Sponeck, the former United Nations Coordinator for Humanitarian Aid for Iraq, discusses the lessons we should learn from the Iraq War, especially the difference between human security and military security. As head of the Oil-for-Food program, he was responsible for all UN activity in that country until he resigned in March 2000 in protest over the UN Security Council's Iraq policy. A former Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, Graf von Sponeck argued that the price of the economic sanctions against Iraq was paid by the most vulnerable of Iraqi civilians. Contact: Carol Persin, (519) 884-8111, ext. 8259.
