Ryerson Unveils Highlights Of Black Star Photo Collection

Nov. 14, 2005--Images of iconic political and cultural figures will be featured in a free exhibit Friday, Nov. 18 to Friday, Dec. 2 at Ryerson University's Image Arts Gallery, 122 Bond St., 3rd floor. Hours of operation are: Monday to Saturday, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The closing reception will be held on Thursday, Dec. 1, 6 p.m. to 8 pm.

"Highlights of the Collection" is the first of a series of exhibitions featuring works from Ryerson's Black Star Historical Black & White Photography Collection. The exhibition will present a digital slideshow of some of the key images in the collection, including major international political and cultural figures, the history of conflict from the First World War through Vietnam and beyond, the American Civil Rights Movement, popular culture and early space exploration. Exhibition visitors can further explore the collection, the photographers and their work at computer workstations in the gallery.

A remarkable visual legacy of the 20th century, the collection contains almost 300,000 black and white photographs of extraordinary artistic and documentary value. This collection is an eyewitness to history, and many photographs, first published in Life magazine, are instantly recognizable. The holdings include works by world-famous photographers and photojournalists, many of whom had a profound impact on the history of photography and photojournalism. Almost every notable political and cultural figure from the 1930s to the 1980s is represented, from Harry Houdini to John F. Kennedy to Marshall McLuhan.
