DATE: Nov. 15, 2005 The MUN Folklore Society presents a selection of interdisciplinary papers examining Newfoundland folklore in the 21st century. The event takes place on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Inco Innovation Centre, room IIC-2001. English’s Only a Fisherman’s Daughter: A Tale of Newfoundland Rosie Patch – The Many Meanings of NewfoundlandTrigger Mitts 1–2:20 p.m.- Rituals, Beliefs and Practices Tara Simmonds – The Devil and Landscape Anna Lafferty – Emotional Expression of Bereaved Relatives in Newfoundland Karlie King – The Mana of Spiritual Manual Techniques 2:30-3:30 p.m. Music Sarah Moore – James Moore, Ron Hynes and NewfoundlandMusic: An Ethnography of a Fan Philip Hiscock – Gazeebow Unit: Local Language and Vernacularity in a St. John’s Rap Group There will be a special lunch of West African and Caribbean food available for purchase as well.
