E-Dialogue and Public Forum on Creating a Post-Carbon Society

Victoria – Royal Roads University will launch a national on-line discussion Wednesday, Nov. 23 on how Canada can secure a more sustainable energy future. The dialogue by leading researchers and practitioners will lead off a year-long series of real time e-dialogues and an online public forum on this critical public policy issue facing all Canadians.

"Controlling carbon-driven global climate change is one of the greatest challenges of this century," says RRU president Richard Skinner. "We need innovation to meet this challenge, plus a commitment from governments, industries and individuals. That’s why we want to engage people from diverse backgrounds and link leading-edge research to public policy."

The first e-dialogue in the post-carbon series will take place Nov. 23, 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. PST. (See list of experts below. Future dialogues will be announced over the year). Members of the public can "listen" to the e-dialogues online and then participate in an ongoing asynchronous public forum in which individual Canadians can express their opinions and share ideas and information. At the end of next year, Royal Roads will publish a summary action report which will be disseminated widely to government decision-makers at all levels.

"We’re taking the approach that the question is not if we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, the question is how best we do it and how much time do we have," says RRU professor Ann Dale, who will moderate the post-carbon e-dialogues. "This year’s hurricane devastation and the resulting increase in gas prices may spur new interest in energy efficiency. After all, energy consumers don’t want barrels of oil; they want the services those barrels provide, let’s explore diverse ways of meeting our needs in the future."
