Was Einstein right? U of C hosts free public lecture

U of C Hosts Free Public Lecture

Albert Einstein is arguably the world’s most influential and well-known physicist. In 1905 he revolutionized our understanding of the fundamental rules of nature when he published three papers (on light quanta, Brownian motion and the special theory of relativity), all within the space of a year. Coincidentally 100 years later, the United Nations has declared 2005 as the World Year of Physics, and to honour the role Einstein has played in modern physics, the theme is "Einstein in the 21st Century".

As part of scheduled events the World Year of Physics Committee (WYP2005) is sponsoring a national public lecture tour that is traveling across Canada this fall called "Was Einstein Right?" The tour began in Ontario on October 5^th and will wrap up in Victoria, British Columbia on November 19^th . The lecture series is visiting 20 Canadian locations, including the University of Calgary on November 18^th .

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is canceling classes that day so that its senior students and faculty can participate in a mini-conference. Students and faculty from Mount Royal College and the University of Lethbridge will also be participating. This celebration culminates with a free public lecture in the evening by Dr. Clifford Will, a professor of physics at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, and president of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation.

With the support of the Canadian Association of Physicists, Dr. Will has been traveling across Canada asking the question "Was Einstein Right?" His lecture is open to anyone who has an interest in Albert Einstein, his ideas, or science in general. Dr. Will explains some of the critical tests of Einstein’s theories; tests that have already been done, and tests that are being planned for the future. He will also demonstrate how Einstein’s theory of Relativity plays an important role in our daily life.
