Fall Convocation ceremonies put achievers in spotlight

All media are invited to attend the University of Calgary’s fall Convocation ceremonies on Thursday, November 10. More than 1,400 students will be eligible to receive their degrees in two separate ceremonies.

John Forzani, one of Canada’s retail business leaders, and Andrew Raeburn, a leader in the city’s cultural and academic community, will receive honorary doctor of law degrees. Forzani will be honoured at the 9:30 am ceremony and Raeburn at 2 pm. They will be the 327th and 328th honorary degrees that the university has conferred in its 39-year history. The ceremonies will take place in the Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

Forzani is one of Calgary’s most successful entrepreneurs and has become a retail icon across the country. Raeburn is the Executive Director of the Honens International Piano Competition in Calgary.

The university will also honour Carol Stewart, currently assigned as the Provost’s Advisor on Collaborative Relations, with the Order of the University of Calgary at the 9:30 am ceremony.

Kent Hehr, the 2005 recipient of the U of C’s Graduate of the Last Decade (Gold) Award, will give the Alumni welcome at 9:30 am. Hehr graduated with a law degree in 2001. He’s also President of the Canadian Paraplegic Association (Alberta).

At 2:30 pm Hannah Stilwell, co-founder of Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, will give the Alumni welcome. Stilwell graduated from the U of C with a BA degree in 1985 and is a teacher, performer and choreographer with over two decades of professional experience.

The morning ceremonies include students from the faculties of Environmental Design, Haskayne School of Business, Kinesiology, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Schulich School of Engineering, Science, Social Work, and Graduate Studies. The afternoon Convocation features students from the faculties of Communication and Culture, Education, Fine Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Graduate Studies. In total approximately 700 students are expected to attend.

An area has been reserved for media near the front of the stage. A media feed will be available. For more information contact Janna Klemen, Media Relations, 220-4756. For a map of the campus, see www.ucalgary.ca/map.
