CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY TO UNVEIL MAJOR ARTWORK BY JESUS CARLES DE VILALLONGA

MONTREAL/November 9, 2005 —

- On Monday, November 14, at 6 p.m., Concordia University will unveil Imaginary Portrait of 24 Universal Geniuses of Today (240×460 cm, latex on Brussels canvas, 1980-1981), the most ambitious work in the career of the Quebec/Catalan artist of international acclaim, Jesús Carles de Vilallonga.

The painting will hang in one of the two amphitheatres of the Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Integrated Complex (1515 St. Catherine St. West). The other amphitheatre includes three restored Art Deco murals from the old York Theatre that were unveiled in April.

Created twenty five years ago in an abandoned castle in Girona, Spain, Imaginary Portrait of 24 Universal Geniuses of Today, was conceived in the grand tradition of monumental frescoes. It is a composite portrait of painters, sculptors, film-makers, writers, astronauts, scientists, architects, composers, writers, poets, chefs, choreographers, opera singers, ballerinas and actresses, all of whom, in the artist’s view, represented the genius of the twentieth century.

"A vibrant homage to some of the leading artists and scientists of our time, the placement of this work in a university dedicated to knowledge and discovery is highly appropriate", said Concordia President Claude Lajeunesse. "It further reinforces Concordia’s commitment to integrating the arts on its campuses, a message to all, about the University’s role as both a patron and champion of culture in all its forms", he added.

The mural was donated to the University by Diane and Salvatore Guerrera, major collectors of Vilallonga’s work. The Guerreras also commissioned Le regard des mots, a book of poetry written by renowned Quebec figure Gilles Vigneault, and illustrated by Vilallonga. Both fervent disciples of literature, the author and artist built up a strong friendship resulting in this joint collaboration. The book will be launched at 3 p.m., prior to the art unveiling, in the atrium of the same complex.

The artist, the author and the donors will be present at both events.
