Norman Newman Centre for Entrepreneurship Opens at Dalhousie – Announcement Nov 10, 12 noon

Dalhousie University is pleased to announce the opening of the Norman Newman Centre for Entrepreneurship. Focusing on research, teaching and outreach, the Centre is named in recognition of the career and achievements of Norman Newman, a prominent Halifax businessman. Mr. Newman was both president and owner of Capital Stores, Value Fair Health and Beauty Aids, Inglewood Realties and the Steak and Stein Restaurants. He served the general Dalhousie community through his service on the Board of Governors from 1987 until his death in 1993. During his tenure he served as a member of the executive committee, a trustee of the pension fund and chair of the investment, building and grounds development committee.

The Norman Newman Centre for Entrepreneurship, housed in the new Kenneth C. Rowe Management Building’s Centre for Integrated Research and Learning, will be led by our Director, David Roach. A highly skilled entrepreneur and advisor to many local and national organizations, Mr. Roach brings a diverse background ranging from Aerospace to biotechnology.

The Centre is funded through partnerships which include the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the Nova Scotia Office of Economic Development and the John Dobson Foundation. To date, in excess of $200,000 of funding has been secured to support the activities of the Centre, including our Co-operative Education Entrepreneurial Work Terms. Students from this program have run their own ventures or conducted detailed feasibilities for their own businesses over a 4-month summer co-op work term. "Our focus is on creating hands-on entrepreneurial experiences throughout all of our activities" says Mr. Roach. This is but one example of exciting opportunities made possible through the Centre for our students and faculty. Similarly, the appointment of Mr. David Earthy, President and Managing Director of Woods Canada as our "Entrepreneur in Residence", further strengthens our ability to offer seasoned entrepreneurial experience and guidance to our students.

The focus of the Centre is to engage in research, teaching and outreach with Faculty from across Dalhousie and other universities. Centre activities include theoretical and applied research, student internships, seminars, workshops and conferences. Faculty and students from across the University have the opportunity to become involved in the Centre and participate in our multidisciplinary activities.

A reception announcing the Norman Newman Centre for Entrepreneurship is being held, Thursday, November 10 at 12 noon, 2nd floor Kenneth C. Rowe Management Building, 6100 University Ave. The media is welcome.
