Sustainability Forum celebrates 20th anniversary of sister cities Vancouver and Guangzhou, China

BURNABY, BC: Topics from green transportation to living walls to the 2010 Olympic Village will be discussed this weekend at the 2005 Sustainability Forum, hosted by the British Columbia Institute of Technology.

The Forum will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of Vancouver’s relationship with its sister city, Guangzhou, China, as a number of delegates from its Construction Commission will attend and share knowledge and ideas with Vancouver experts.

The weekend will open with welcome messages from Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell, BCIT President Tony Knowles, and Minister of Western Diversification Stephen Owen, followed by an address by Guangzhou’s Vice-Mayor, Chen Mingde. The keynote speech – Extending Sustainable Design from Buildings to Communities – will be presented by Peter Busby, of Busby Perkins + Will Architects. Last month Mr. Busby was named the 2005 winner of the Vancouver Arts Award for Design.

Speakers on Saturday include Larry Beasley of the City of Vancouver on Planning and Urban Design: Shaping Vancouver; and Dale Mikkelsen, also from the City, on Southeast False Creek: Sustainability Precinct/2010 Olympic Village. Sunday’s highlights include BCIT’s Maureen Connelly, on the topic of Green Roofs and Living Walls; and Solomon Wong of InterVISTAS Consulting, Planning for Sustainability and the Growth of Transportation Gateways.

The cost to attend both days is $170, with students receiving a reduced rate of $70, and for one day the fee is $95, or $40 for students. Lunch is included, and all events take place at BCIT’s downtown Vancouver campus, 555 Seymour Street.

For information and registration instructions, contact Soka Wong at 604-453-4085, email soka_wong@bcit.ca, or visit this page to download a registration form.
