"Guatemalan and CDN Youth Working for Peace" Tour to stop in Sackville, Oct. 25

SACKVILLE, NB — On Tuesday, October 25 at 7 p.m. in the Avard Dixon building, room 118, Mount Allison University campus, there will be a presentation and round table discussion with Guatemalan youth activist Filiberto, member of HIJOS (Sons and Daughters of the Disappeared) as part of his Maritime University tour: "Guatemalan and Canadian Youth Working for Peace."

This tour will extend from Fredericton, New Brunswick to Sydney, Nova Scotia. The idea behind this tour came from a meeting between Maritime and Guatemalan young adults in Guatemala City in 2004.

The aim of this tour is to provide an opportunity for exchange between Guatemalan and Maritime young adults. This tour will involve one young adult from Guatemala, Filiberto Celada who is actively involved with an organization called HIJOS. HIJOS stands for Sons and Daughters of the Disappeared and the organization uses art work, theatre, and popular education in their advocacy work in justice and recognition. This tour will give university students from the Maritimes an opportunity to exchange their experiences in social justice in their communities with Filiberto as well as to learn from Filiberto’s experiences with HIJOS in Guatemala.

This is a unique opportunity for building solidarity and inspiration, through an exchange of experiences between fellow youth working for human rights. As well, with the recent natural disasters occurring in Guatemala, Filiberto will be raising funds during his visit for disaster relief and rebuilding, selling coffee and other products.

Everyone is welcome to attend and there is no admission charge.
