News conference with Richard Pound

Members of the media are invited to meet Mr. Richard Pound on Saturday, October 29, at 10:30 a.m., in Laurentian University's Brenda Wallace Reading Room, 2nd floor, J.N. Desmarais Library.

Mr. Pound, one of the most powerful persons in the Olympic movement, will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Sports Administration by Laurentian University at its Fall Convocation Ceremony to be held that same day, at 2 p.m., in Laurentian's Fraser Auditorium.

A swimming finalist in the 1960 Olympiad and a gold medal winner at the 1962 Commonwealth Games, Mr. Pound has acquired a far-ranging reputation for his work in sports administration in Canada and abroad. Secretary General and then President of the Canadian Olympic Association, Mr. Pound has been a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1978, serving as Vice-President from 1987-1991 and 1996-2000. Through his involvement and contributions, he is acknowledged to be not only the most influential Canadian within the Olympic movement but also one of the most powerful persons in the IOC hierarchy.

This Canadian-born lawyer and chancellor of McGill University has accomplished a great deal during his lengthy involvement in the IOC. He was called upon in times of trouble to solve the IOC's financial and ethical problems. Mr. Pound created The Olympic Program (TOP), a sponsorship program that creates more reliable sources of income for the Olympic movement, and negotiated profitable TV-rights deals. His relentless pursuit of the truth has done much to restore the integrity of the Olympic Games.

Since 1999, has held the position of Chair of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). In this position, he is working to develop an international system of doping control for athletes.

Richard Pound is the author of the six following books: Five Rings Over Korea: the Secret Negotiations Behind the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul; Chief Justice W.R. Jackett: By the Law of the Land; Strikerman Elliott: The First Fifty Years; Inside the Olympics; High Impact Quotations; and Canadian Facts and Dates.

Please confirm your attendance by calling Paul de la Riva, Media Relations Officer at Laurentian University, at (705) 675-1151, ext. 3406.
