Brandon University holds official opening of Convergys Learning Centre

October 27, 2006

On Thursday, October 26, Brandon University held an official opening for the Convergys Learning Centre, located in the John E. Robbins Library on the BU campus. The opening featured a short formal presentation and ribbon cutting followed by a reception and demonstration of some of the equipment in the room Brandon University Reference Librarian Rainer Schira. Among the attendees were Julie Hewitt, Brandon Site Leader for Convergys, Cheryl McLelland, Human Resource Manager, Convergys Brandon, Patrick Robineau, from MBNA Canada, Mike Dutka, Manager, Staples Brandon and His Worship Dave Burgess, Mayor of Brandon.

This new, state-of-the-art facility brings together librarians and technical support, digital resources such as productivity software, electronic journals and databases, print resources, and the latest in technology with the goal of assisting BU students in becoming information literate.

The Convergys Learning Centre was made possible through generous donations to the BU & YOU Campaign from Convergys, who contributed the funds necessary for completing the renovations to the room, MBNA Canada, who supplied funding for purchasing computer stations, and Staples, who donated a printer for the room.

"We are delighted to have this wonderful state of the art space for our students and very grateful to our donors who made it all possible," said University Librarian Linda Burridge."We are very lucky to have such great corporate citizens, who believe in giving back to the community. Thank you Convergys, MBNA and Staples. Your donation is making a difference in the lives of our students."

"Facilities like this are so important to Brandon, because they enhance the ability of our people to develop the skills they will need to go out and find meaningful, sustainable employment," said Convergys Brandon Site Leader Julie Hewitt.

"We've been working on this for some time," said Patrick Robineau, of MBNA Canada, "and it is very inspiring to see the way that it has come together."

The BU & YOU Campaign is the most ambitious and encompassing fundraising initiative in the history of Brandon University. To date, funds raised are reaching $7.8 million, or roughly 96% of the campaign goal. Support of the BU & YOU Campaign enriches the lives of everyone on campus, especially students, by growing campus infrastructure, enhancing learning and teaching resources, and succeeding with research and endowments.
