October 2, 2006 Source: : http://communications.uvic.ca/releases/release.php?display=release&id=756 Versatile Building For A New Generation The new University of Victoria Engineering/Computer Science Building contains cutting edge sustainable and technological features, giving UVic faculty, students and staff light-filled, energy-efficient facilities in which to conduct research, learn and work. The 8,975 square metre $25-million project will help address a serious space shortage on campus and increase UVic’s capacity to advance its technological research. The new building was officially opened today by Minister of Advanced Education, Murray Coell.
"The Province’s $22-million investment has helped create state-of-the-art classrooms and labs where students will prepare to take their place in BC’s knowledge economy," says Advanced Education Minister Murray Coell. "Thousands of job opportunities have been created for engineers and computer scientists through our robust economy, and these students will be graduating at the right time to put their skills to work to keep the momentum going." "The teaching and research facilities in our new Engineering/Computer Science Building provide much-needed additional space for both engineering and computer science students and other departments," says UVic President David Turpin. "The university is very grateful to the provincial government for its support of our researchers, graduate students and undergraduate students by providing funding for this outstanding new building." "We are especially pleased that the provincial government funding for this beautiful new building also provides support for graduate students in addition to the excellent undergraduate facilities," says UVic Dean of Engineering Michael Miller. "Graduate research is vital for advancing engineering and computer science knowledge and these facilities provide our students with the kind of hands-on experience that will be the foundation for their careers as highly qualified personnel essential to the growth of the economy of BC and Canada." The new six story building contains lecture theatres, teaching labs, research labs and administrative and support space for graduate students, faculty and staff. The main floor classes are available to students from other UVic departments and for public lectures and events.
