Nipissing University brings Africa to North Bay

North Bay, ON, Monday, October 31, 2005 — Nipissing University’s local World University Service Committee (WUSC) is pleased to present an evening of celebration and exploration into the people and cultures of Africa on Wednesday, November 2, at 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the Weaver Auditorium (B200).

Entitled Into Africa, the evening will feature presentations from Nipissing students, staff and faculty about Nipisisng’s international programs as well as personal experiences and opportunities in Africa. Vicky Samuel, a refugee student originally from Rwanda, will discuss Nipissing’s student refugee sponsorship program. Dr. Ron Common, dean of education at Nipissing, will give a presentation with Dr. Lorraine Frost about opportunities for Bachelor of Education teaching placements in Africa. The evening will culminate in a fashion show featuring traditional African clothing and music, with commentary by Samuel and George Mumba, a Canada World Youth participant from Kenya.

The evening is open to the public and is free of charge. Donations are welcome and will go to support WUSC’s Student Refugee Program at Nipissing University.

"Into Africa is an opportunity for students and the local community to discover Africa’s culture and its people," said Jill Beaton, a third-year history student and chair of the Nipissing Student Refugee Sponsorship Program Action Group, as well as the event coordinator. "It should be a fun and informative night for everyone involved. Hopefully people can gain some further awareness about Africa and about opportunities that exist here at Nipissing to explore Africa and its culture."

"I’m really looking forward to this, the second annual Into Africa presentation at Nipissing University, said Dr. Dennis Mock, university president. "Events such as this, that educate people in an international context, are very important. We’ve had a number of students travelling to Africa for study and research over the past few years, and a number of students studying at Nipissing hail from Africa. In today’s global market, it is vitally important to learn about other cultures and we are committed to that idea."
