about school

Series to
highlight education policy, preventing bullying and more

McGill University is pleased to announce its participation in this year's
CBC "Montreal Matters" series, the fifth in an annual month-long exploration
of issues relevant to the community. School is the theme this year, and will
be discussed in public lectures, symposia and workshops. McGill will co-host
the following four sessions on the topic:

Workshops: Surviving Homework for Parents
Elementary School: Tuesday, Oct. 10, 7:30-9:30 pm, Tuesday, Oct. 17,
7:30-9:30 pm
High School: Wednesday, Oct. 11, 7:30-9:30 pm, Wednesday, Oct. 18, 7:30-9:40
pm
McGill University's Centre for Educational Leadership (CEL) is presenting
four weekly workshops to guide parents through the perils of homework. The

Panel Discussion: Attitude or Aptitude: Why do Children Dislike School?
October 16, 7-9 pm
No parent relishes hearing their child say, "I don't want to go to school!"
A panel of McGill education researchers will lead the audience in a
discussion of why some children disengage from the learning process in their
classrooms. Do they have learning needs that aren't being met? Is the
curriculum irrelevant or are teaching methods not motivating? Does the
problem originate with the kids or the schools? How can parents help?
Panelists: Prof. Roger Slee, Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. Nancy
Heath, of the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and
others will provide insight on this issue.

Virginia Shadbolt Symposium: "Investigating Inclusion: From Educational
Policies to Practices"
October 18, 2-5 pm
Moderated by Prof. Shree Mulay, Director of the McGill Centre for Research
and Teaching on Women, this symposium reports on the results of a
multicultural Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) project:
"Investigating Inclusion: From Educational Policies to Practices." The
researchers will present their findings on how well multicultural policies
are being integrated into Montreal-area schools. A panel discussion on
intercultural issues, inclusive policies and practices in schools will
follow.

Community forum for parents and educators: Stopping bullying & harassment in
schools
October 26, 7:30-9 pm
McGill's Social Equity and Diversity Education Office is holding a community
forum that will address the issues of bullying and harassment in Montreal
schools. Experts from the Faculty of Education will present information and
provide suggestions on how educators and parents can work together to reduce
this problem. Particular emphasis on new technology and cyber-bullying as
well as how gender plays a role in bullying and harassing behaviours will be
discussed. Panelists include Professor Shaheen Shariff and PhD candidate Liz
Meyer, both from the Faculty of Education, among others.
