The album includes the following pieces: The world première recording of "Paganini vs. Chopin - The Practice," by composer Patrick Carrabré, also a professor in the Brandon University School of Music; Sergei Rachmaninoff’s "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini" Op.43; Witold Lutoslawski's "Variations on a Theme of Paganini"; and Alexander Rosenblatt’s "Variations on a Theme of Paganini." For the CD, the pieces composed by Carrabré, Rachmaninoff and Lutoslawski were recorded with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (David Lockington, conductor) at the Centennial Concert Hall on March 4, 2005 for broadcast on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) Radio Two program Symphony Hall. The Alexander Rosenblatt composition is a solo piano piece that was recorded live by the CBC at the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto. Professor Jan Narveson, as well as Brandon University professors Dr. Lawrence Jones and Dr. T. Patrick Carrabré wrote program notes for the CD package. Alexander Tselyakov has been described as a "phenomenal pianist" (Germany), having "an intoxicating sound" (Israel), and "a perfect artistic individuality" (Russia) and "represents the best aspect of Russian pianism and all its attributes... effectively synthesizing the emotional balance of Arthur Rubinstein and the more highly-strung febrile quality of Horowitz" (Harris Goldsmith, New York Concert Review). He has performed as guest soloist with many of the world¹s leading orchestras, including the Moscow Philharmonic, Leningrad Philharmonic, Tokyo Philharmonic, Moscow Radio Symphony, Warsaw National Philharmonic and Toronto Symphony. Active as a chamber musician, Tselyakov collaborates with many leading Canadian musicians and is Artistic Director of the Pender Harbour Chamber Music Festival in British Columbia and of the Clear Lake Chamber Music Festival in Manitoba. Highly personable and accessible, he is as popular with Brandon University students as he is with concert audiences around the world. Also nominated for Western Canadian Music Awards in the Outstanding Classical Recording category are Chenoa Anderson, for Big Flutes – Canadian Music for Alto and Bass Flute, Land's End Chamber Ensemble, for Rollin Down #1, Robert Silverman, for Starry, Starry Night, and van Mourik and Foreman, for en blanc et noir. The winner of the award will be selected by a jury appointed by the Western Canadian Music Alliance, and will be presented as part of the Western Canadian Music Awards Ceremony at the Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Sunday, October 22nd 2006. Alexander Tselyakov will be performing on the classical concert stage during the Western Canadian Music Awards on October 22nd, 2006, which will be broadcasted live by CBC.
