The recipients of the 2006 Ottawa Life Sciences Achievement Awards are Health Innovation Award Dr. Annette O'Connor Senior Scientist, Ottawa Health Research Institute (OHRI) Professor, University of Ottawa Dr. Annette O’Connor of the Ottawa Health Research Institute is awarded the Health Innovation Award for her internationally recognized work in developing decision-making tools aimed at improving patients’ participation in their own health care. Dr. O’Connor holds a Tier One Canada Research Chair in Health Care Consumer Decision Support and is a professor in the University of Ottawa’s School of Nursing. Her online and print-based decision-making tools help patients’ base decisions about their health care on better knowledge, more realistic expectations of outcomes and clearer personal values. Company of the Year Award Liponex Inc. Dr. Daniel Sparks, Chief Science Officer, Liponex Inc. Associate Professor, University of Ottawa Heart Institute Bill Dickie, President, CEO, Liponex Inc. Liponex is named company of the year for its rapid success in developing a unique product designed to treat and prevent heart disease – the number one killer in the developed world. Liponex’s CRD5 is the only known developmental drug that increases HDL –good cholesterol- while lowering triglycerides. Early tests also suggest it can reduce LDL – bad cholesterol. It’s this combination that has put the spotlight on Liponex. CRD5 is a dramatic leap forward from Statin drugs, the most common cholesterol treatment. It was demonstrated to be safe in three completed Phase 1 clinical trials and is now in Phase II clinical trials. Dr. Michael Smith Promising Scientist Award Dr. Rees Kassen Assistant Professor, evolutionary ecology and genetics University of Ottawa Dr. Rees Kassen of the University of Ottawa is honoured for his promising research in adaptation, ecology and the evolution of diversity. Dr. Kassen received his PhD in biology from McGill University in 2001. He is now an assistant professor of evolutionary ecology and genetics at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Kassen is considered one of the top three young microbial ecologists in Canada, and one of the brightest stars in experimental evolution. Career Achievement Award Dr. W. Bruce Jackson Director General, University of Ottawa Eye Institute, Ottawa Hospital Dr. Jackson is considered Canada’s foremost ophthalmologist and an international expert in Excimer laser surgery. A former chairman of the department of ophthalmology at McGill University, Dr. Jackson was recruited in 1991 to take up the same position at the University of Ottawa. He also became the director general of the University of Ottawa Eye Institute, one of the world’s top vision research centres. Thanks to him, some of the profession’s brightest minds have come to Ottawa to undertake groundbreaking research. For this, Dr. Jackson is the recipient of this year’s Career Achievement Award. About the OLSC Achievement Awards The Ottawa Life Sciences Council Achievement Awards were established to recognize those individuals who have made significant contributions to Ottawa's emerging life sciences sector. Since their inception in 1994, 74 outstanding individuals and organizations have been honoured by their peers. They include the "who's who" of Ottawa's R&D and business community.
