October 5, 2006 Source: : http://www.brandonu.ca/news/article.asp?A_ID=1117 BU Professor Emeritus Dr. Pandelis Halamandaris honoured by National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada BRANDON, MB – The National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada (NEPMCC) has honoured Dr. Pandelis Halamandaris, Professor Emeritus of Teacher Education at Brandon University, and Deputy Director of the University of Manitoba Centre for Hellenic Civilization, with a Community/Arts Award recognizing his outstanding achievements, contributions and community service in promoting the understanding, the traditions and the interests of Hellenic-Canadian communities, and for his leadership, courage and dedication for the promotion of multiculturalism, human rights, respect of human and cultural values, and equality among all Canadians. "It is always an Honour to be recognized outside your immediate environment," says Dr. Halamandaris. The Lieutenant Governor and NEPCC President Thomas S. Saras presented the award to Dr. Halamandaris at a ceremony held in the Lieutenant Governor's Suite in the Main Legislative Building of Ontario on September 22, 2006 in Toronto. A Professor at BU since 1969, Halamandaris was named Professor Emeritus in 2001, and was instrumental in developing the Indian and Metis Project for Action in Careers Through Teacher Education (IMPACTE) program, a predecessor to the current Brandon University Northern Teacher Education Program (BUNTEP), and was Director of the International Development Projects (1975-95)- Malawi, Swaziland, Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia . Dr. Halamadaris is a previous recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Swaziland and the Marquis Project's Global Citizenship Award, and currently sits on that organization's Board of Directors. The purpose of The National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada Awards is to honour the outstanding contributions and achievements of the individuals and organizations in fostering an inclusive and equitable community of communities. Nominations for the awards are open to individual residents and organizations based or operating in Canada (includes voluntary non-profit, business & government agencies) for their outstanding contributions and achievements, and for exceptional activities in journalism and toward developing cultural awareness and harmony for a more inclusive and equitable community in Canada. Each year, 20 awards are given, divided into the following categories: 10 for Journalism Awards and 10 for individuals in the community.
