Cheers to a great scholar and
colleague: University hosts big retirement party for Dr. Richard
Chesley

G.R.
(Dick) Chesley is a professor admired by many and today the University took
the time to thank him for his 17 years of service to the Sobey School of
Business at Saint Mary's.

At his retirement party, held at the Unilever Executive Lounge - which is
located on the fourth floor of the Sobey Building - students, faculty,
staff, alumni and friends of the University turned out to salute him for his
hard work and dedication as an accounting professor.

He was presented with a number of special gifts at his party this afternoon.

And, a number of emails from his colleagues and former students now living
around the world were all read out loud by Dr. Peter Secord and Dr. Jeff
Power, both of whom are professors in the accounting department in the Sobey
School of Business at Saint Mary's.

Other speakers today included Dr. J. Colin Dodds, President of Saint Mary’s,
and Dr. David Wicks, Dean of the Sobey School of Business.

In an emotional and yet entertaining speech to the audience, Dr. Chesley
said the only person he credits for his success is his wife Dianna of 40
years.

"I have many people to thank today," he told the crowd.

"But the only person I will thank is my wife Dianna. She is the one who has
been with me throughout my entire career. She is a special person, who I
love dearly, and she is the reason why I have had such a successful career
in academia," he smiled.

Before coming to Saint Mary’s in 1989, he held positions at Dalhousie
University and the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton School of Business)
along with visiting positions at Lingnan University, Baptist University,
Hong Kong, and the University of Iowa, Iowa City.

He is a graduate of Mount Allison University, Sackville, N.B. and The Ohio
State University, Columbus, Ohio, and was a member of the Institute of
Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia.

His career activities include numerous research publications in prestigious
journals such as the Accounting Review and the Journal of Accounting
Research, books such as six editions of Managerial Accounting, three
editions of Fundamentals of Financial Accounting, both published with
McGraw-Hill Ryerson (Irwin). For his educational endeavours, the Canadian
Academic Accounting Association presented him the L.S. Rosen Outstanding
Educator Award in 1996.

Dr. Chesley will remain active as an academic in the Master of Finance
Program offered via the Sobey School of Business at Saint Mary's.

Saint Mary's University is known for its community outreach projects, both
in Canada and around the world. Saint Mary's, founded in 1802, is home to
one of Canada's leading business schools, a Science Faculty widely known for
its cutting-edge research, a comprehensive and innovative Arts Faculty and a
vibrant Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.
