Science Fiction film,
eXistenZ, up for discussion at
Malaspina

Watch, chat and snack
university-style during a free public movie night at Malaspina
University-College’s Cowichan campus, Tuesday Oct. 17.

English professor Lynn Wytenbroek and her science fiction class are hosting
the evening, which will include a viewing of the 1999 movie, eXistenZ, free
popcorn, and a lively discussion.

"It’s a great film and the evening is a chance for people to experience a
university-class discussion," said Wytenbroek.

"We want to show people that while you can get academic credits at
Malaspina, you can also have some fun with learning."

Science fiction is among the most popular and innovative forms of fiction
read by adults today.

"Science fiction also makes wonderful visual entertainment, as we have seen
over the years with such block-busters as the Star Wars trilogies, the Alien
series, and the small screen shows such as Star Trek, Stargate and Surface,"
said Wytenbroek.

eXistenZ, released in 1999, is directed by Canadian David Cronenberg and
includes such stars as Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jude Law and Canadian actress
Sarah Polley. Allegra Geller, played by Leigh, is a leading game designer
who is testing a new virtual reality game, eXistenZ, with a focus group when
she is attacked by a fanatic assassin and sucked into her own virtual
reality.

The film is not suitable for children. The movie starts at 6:30 p.m. in the
Cowichan Campus cafeteria.

Wytenbroek’s Science Fiction course is just one of many academic university
courses offered at Malaspina’s Cowichan Campus. In January new university
courses will be offered including: World Religions, Intro to Northwest Coast
First Nations Carving, Beginning Spanish 1 and Criminology: Individual
Explanations for Crime and Deviance.
