Why Dance?, presented as part of the 2005 Professional Series by the University of Calgary Program of Dance, is an exploration of what motivates a dancer. Why Dance? is running for one night only Friday, September 30, 2005 at the University Theatre at the University of Calgary. The Professional Series launches the Program of Dance’s 2005/2006 season of performance events. The series presents the work of established choreographers, including U of C Dance faculty members and national/international guests, with work performed by professional dancers. Why Dance? features the work of well-known local choreographer Michèle Moss with guests from the professional company of Decidedly Jazz Danceworks (DJD) and recreational dancers from the DJD School. Why Dance? is an engaging commentary on the experiences of professional dancers and dedicated recreational dancers. Learning to dance can be a profound experience that shapes and transforms people’s lives, their commitments and beliefs. This piece will offer us an introspective look into that process for a dancer, while providing an engaging evening of concert dance. The performance of Why Dance? is also part of a larger research study being conducted by Ms. Moss at the University of Calgary that examines how professional and recreational dancers give meaning and represent dance in their lives.
