September 11, 2006 Source: : http://www.mta.ca/news/index.cgi?id=1091 Spontaneous theatre to be presented at MASTerworks, Sept. 16 On Saturday, September 16, at 8 p.m., the Windsor Theatre season will start with a bang. MASTerworks, a series of short plays, will be presented in the Windsor Theatre in the University Centre. MASTerworks will be a production by the Mount Allison Spontaneous Theatre troupe, a new initiative created this year by students Tim Jones and Stephanie Dotto. It involves Mount Allison students creating their own plays in a short, 24-hour time span. The process will begin the evening of Friday, September 15, when all students involved will meet, and split into groups, each comprised of a writer, director, and actors. Each group will then begin to create its own play. After a discussion with the participants, the writers will work through the night to create a script based on their group’s ideas. In the morning, the directors will begin turning each of their scripts into a play, meeting with designers and rehearsing with actors throughout the day. The plays will be performed for the public Saturday night at 8 p.m. in Windsor Theatre, only 24 hours after the process began. Director of drama Alex Fancy thinks the event will be a fine start to the season, stating, "this project will draw attention, early in the season, to the talent and commitment of students who work and perform in the Windsor Theatre." Event organizer Stephanie Dotto says, "this is a wonderful opportunity to involve students that have always wanted to be a part of play-making, either as writers, directors, or actors, but have been too intimidated. Our goal with this project is to be as inclusive as possible, and to really allow people to get hands-on experience with the dramatic process." All interested students are encouraged to attend an information session on Tuesday, September 12, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the East Lounge. The Saturday performance of MASTerworks is a pay-what-you-can event, with proceeds going to Project Rebuild, helping victims of the August fire in downtown Sackville. —30— For further information, contact Tim Jones (tsjns@mta.ca) or Stephanie Dotto (smdtt@mta.ca).
