UNBC Expands Offerings in Continuing Studies

A growing demand for courses that appeal to a wide range of professional and personal interests is leading to a record number of courses offered through the UNBC Continuing Studies department. The courses do not count towards a university degree, but provide opportunities to gain work-related and personal skills. The full catalogue of courses is available as a pdf file by clicking this link. Alternatively, follow this link to browse courses online.

"We’re offering more than 250 courses this year – our highest number ever," says UNBC Continuing Studies Manager Randall Brazzoni. "The offerings include an historical journey through Spain, computer courses leading to advanced certification, arts and culture courses, leadership skills, a mini-medical school featuring physicians involved with the Northern Medical Program, and a series of courses related to resource management and GIS."

New this year are art courses delivered in partnership with the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, International travel tours, an astronomy workshop, and courses on such diverse topics as the psychology of happiness, art appreciation, and international intelligence.

Last academic year, just over 3000 people took courses through Continuing Studies. Added to the 4200 students registered in degree programs and university-credit courses, more than 7000 people registered for UNBC courses in 2005-06.

"The growth of Continuing Studies is an example of how UNBC is aiming to be responsive to the educational and training needs of northerners," says UNBC President Don Cozzetto. "For a variety of reasons, many residents may be unable to pursue a full degree program, or they may already have a degree and are just interested in gaining new skills. At the same time, Continuing Studies provides a perfect atmosphere for people who have been out of school for a while and want to ease back into education before considering a UNBC degree. Either way, we want to provide new educational options right here in northern BC."

Courses in Continuing Studies include single-day courses, evening courses spread out over several weeks, and multi-week international travel tours. Courses will be offered this year in 18 communities.
