Not to mention unique. The first ever Futures Atlantic Symposium, hosted by UNBF’s Centre for Financial Studies (CFS), will bring together university students from across Atlantic Canada for a chance to rub shoulders with international and national financial and investment professionals. The symposium brings national financial firms to Fredericton to meet with graduating students seeking careers. It will allow students the opportunity to learn more about job preparation for positions in the investment fields. "It’s a rarity to be able to invite and bring students from across Atlantic Canadian universities to a first class disciplined-based event such as this," said Glenn Cleland, the director of the CFS under UNBF’s faculty of business administration. "We hope this financial and investment symposium can become an annual event in our region. It will allow our future investment leaders to come here and participate in a high-quality symposium with relevant workshops. It’s a chance to show what emerging and bright students we have to such a cross-section of professionals." Futures Atlantic Symposium will be held Sept. 14 to 15 at the Wu Conference Centre on the campus of UNBF. Guest speakers are numerous and include Daniel McCarthy, vice- chairman of CIBC World Markets in Toronto; Richard Kostoff, deputy chairman of TD Securities; Harry Marmer, the senior vice-president of Franklin Templeton Investment (Canada); and Hossein Kazemi, Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Numerous top flight students have found success from the CFS’ Student Investment Fund program which has received numerous accolades for its investment success. The SIF program, established in 1998, is a hands-on, real life investing experience for third-year undergraduate and second-year graduate business students at UNBF. With an initial investment of $1-million, students have grown the funds to nearly $2-million through successful investing. The SIF program is unique among North American student-managed funds with its embedded structured study preparation for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Level One exam. The CFA is the most recognized designation of investment professionals worldwide. "The symposium is about creating promising opportunities for our university graduates and facilitating connections for them with employers who are searching for top-notch talent," said Prof. Cleland. "Many alumnae of Atlantic universities provide useful connections in the global financial market. These networks are beneficial and have served us well."
