Vice-President Academic

St. Thomas University invites applications for the position of Vice-President Academic to join one of Canada’s leading liberal arts universities.

Founded nearly a century ago, St. Thomas is a Roman Catholic university where excellence in teaching is the highest institutional priority. Exclusively undergraduate, St. Thomas offers a core liberal arts programme complemented by professional studies in education and social work. Students graduate with Bachelors of Arts, Applied Arts, Education and Social Work degrees.

Our professors are distinguished teachers, researchers and scholars, and the university holds two Canada Research Chairs in Rural Social Justice and Qualitative Analysis. In addition to one of the highest-ranked learning environments in the country, 2,600 students enjoy a beautiful, intimate campus and close-knit community which unites alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends. Our university provides a unique learning environment where students develop interests, discover passions, see different points of view and learn to think for themselves.

The provincial capital of Fredericton, New Brunswick is nestled on the banks of the scenic St. John River and boasts big city choices with a small town feel. A city on the move, healthy living is a staple and there is an impressive array of cultural and recreational activities. Residents are warm and friendly, and many have discovered that Fredericton is a peaceful place to live and work.

A new President joined St. Thomas in July 2006 and the Vice-President Academic will share in university leadership as well as institutional policy formation, planning and administration and make a vital contribution to the achievement of ambitious institutional goals. As the chief academic officer, the Vice-President Academic will report to the President and have direct responsibility for ensuring high standards of academic quality, managing student enrollment, supporting faculty in achieving excellence in teaching and research, and fostering a learning environment organized for student success.

The university seeks a Vice-President Academic with demonstrated leadership skills who will serve as an advocate for its mission and create an innovative vision for academic programme development and implementation. The successful candidate will possess an earned doctorate degree, preferably in a discipline or related academic field of study offered at St. Thomas, and be eligible for the rank of full professor, having achieved distinction in teaching, research and scholarship. Successful senior academic administrative leadership and a strong commitment to a collegial model of governance are important qualifications for this five-year appointment which commences July 1, 2007.

Interested candidates should send a cover letter and a curriculum vitae in confidence by November 30, 2006 to:

Chair, Search Committee for Vice-President Academic
