Daneke as the first appointee to the Chair in Business Ethics. “The Faculty of Humanities is delighted to have recruited such an established scholar as Greg, who is recognized internationally for his work in business issues,” says Rowland Smith, Dean, Faculty of Humanities, University of Calgary. “While ethics has long been studied in Philosophy, it’s an increasingly relevant topic in business, government, and public affairs. Greg’s multidisciplinary training, teaching, and research involve colleagues from numerous disciplines, including the physical sciences. With Greg as the chair, the Faculty will continue to play a critical role in enhancing the communication among society, the business community, and the university community.” Dr. Daneke comes to the U of C from his post as a Professor of Technology and Resource Management at Arizona State University, where he has taught courses in strategy and entrepreneurship, as well as business ethics and public policy. He holds a PhD in Political Economy from the University of California, and has held appointments at the University of Michigan, Stanford University, and the University of British Columbia. He has consulted with numerous multi-national and start-up firms and has worked with various governmental and non-governmental agencies, including the Navajo Nation, the White House, the Asian Pacific Development Council, European Commission, as well as the Government of Canada. He is the author of over 100 scholarly publications, has secured several research grants totalling over US $1million, and is an active member in the Academy of Management. “In the aftermath of major corporate scandals, such as Enron and Hollinger, it is high time that ethics and economics become reacquainted,” says Dr. Daneke. “This is especially vital in light of mounting resource and technological challenges, such as global climate change. Such challenges will not only call into question our core values, they will greatly tax our capabilities for coordination and cooperation, which is the real test of our humanity as well as our economic institutions.” The Chair in Business Ethics represents a direct response to increasing demands from the public and the investment community for corporations to assume a leadership role in establishing more socially responsible firms. Ethical business principles, and the implementation of corporate social responsibility standards in areas such as human rights, security, labour laws and practices, and the environment have become central not only to healthy business practices, but also to the well being of society. The chair at the U of C is dedicated to linking ethical issues with the specific industry and community concerns, notably energy and the environment. The Chair in Business Ethics is housed in the Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Humanities. Nexen Inc. is the lead industry partner in supporting the Chair in Business Ethics. Suncor Energy Foundation, Shell Canada Ltd., TransAlta Corporation, Enbridge Inc., Deloitte & Touche LLP, Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP, and the Institute for Chartered Accountants of Alberta Education Foundation have generously joined U of C in providing support for the research and teaching opportunities afforded by this chair.
