Dean to Speak in Winnipeg About the Mystery of the Roman Catacombs Event: You’re heard of the DaVinci Code. Dr. John Osborne, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Carleton University will be in Winnipeg to talk about the mystery of the Roman Catacombs. What are they? When and how were they used? And how can we know? Because there is very little surviving written documentation about their function, archaeologists have to look to other sources to find answers—such as the enigmatic mural paintings with which the Catacombs were decorated. This talk is part of the Focus on Carleton University Speakers (FOCUS) tour which is a nation-wide series of speaking engagements for Carleton alumni featuring some of Carleton’s most dynamic researchers. When: Wednesday, October 4, 2006 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Cocktail reception and gallery tour 8:00 – 9:00 p.m. FOCUS presentation Where: Winnipeg Art Gallery 300 Memorial Boulevard Winnipeg, Manitoba Background: Dr. Osborne has been working in Rome for over 30 years, and wrote the entry on the Catacombs in the authoritative Dictionary of Art. His academic background is in the history of material culture, with a special focus on early medieval Italy (Rome and Venice). He taught at the University of Victoria and Queen’s University before returning to Carleton, his alma mater, in July 2005. -30- For more information: Mark Savenkoff Coordinator, Branches and Affiliates Alumni Services, Carleton University (613) 520-2600, ext. 4099 Mark_Savenkoff@carleton.ca alumni.carleton.ca/winnipegFOCUS Lin Moody Media Relations Carleton University 613-520-2600 ext. 8705
