Louis Barriault named University of Ottawa Young Researcher of the Year 2005

OTTAWA, September 13, 2005 — Louis Barriault, uOttawa Chemistry professor, has been named University of Ottawa Young Researcher of the Year.

Fewer than six years after having begun a career as an independent researcher in the field of organic chemistry, Dr. Louis Barriault has already forged an international reputation as a result of his innovative and dynamic approach to gaining a new understanding of the total synthesis of complex natural products.

Dr. Barriault investigates the design and synthesis of medically important molecules. The research support he receives from the Canadian pharmaceutical industry demonstrates of the quality of his innovative and productive approach to research.

In addition to attracting significant interest from the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Barriault, through his growing reputation, has also been instrumental in attracting a number of gifted students to the University of Ottawa. In fact, among his colleagues in the Department of Chemistry, he is known as an enthusiastic recruiter of students. A prime example of his dedication, enthusiasm and prowess as a scientist is the fact that he is directing a group of 12 graduate students, all of them NSERC scholars.
