Windsor Theatre stages a Celebration of Tintamarre, Sept. 17

SACKVILLE, NB — “SUPERFANTASMAGORIQUE! — A Celebration of Tintamarre” will be presented in the Windsor Theatre, on the Mount Allison University campus, on Saturday, September 17 at 8 p.m. This special evening will celebrate the activities of Tintamarre, Mount Allison’s bilingual theatre troupe founded and directed by professor Alex Fancy.

Tintamarre alumni representing the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s and the present decade-in-progress will gather and present scenes from past productions, along with songs and reminiscences. An exhibition of photos, posters, and other Tintamarre ephemera will be on display in the Windsor Theatre lobby, second floor of the University Centre, starting at 10 a.m. that morning.

Tintamarre has presented upwards of a hundred shows, in six provinces and in the United States. In addition, the founder-director has given workshops on the work of the company in six countries.

At Mount Allison, under Fancy’s direction, the troupe has staged acclaimed productions of plays by French and French-Canadian writers, such as Eugene Ionesco, Samuel Beckett, Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, Michel Tremblay, Gratien Gelinas, and Marie Laberge. They have also staged special presentations, with scripts written by the director, at conferences, teaching workshops and special events. The most recent production, “Allison’s Adventures on the Mount by the Marsh,” was presented for the incoming class during this year's orientation.

Tintamarre is best known for its collaborative scripts, written by Fancy under student guidance. Each year they are staged at Mount Allison, then toured to schools throughout the Maritimes. Almost a 100,000 students have seen these shows which dramatize, in French and English, the challenges faced by young people.

Fancy was recently awarded the Lieutenant-Governor’s Prix Dialogue Award in recognition of his efforts in the name of multiculturalism.

To reserve tickets for SUPERFANTASMAGORIQUE!, call the Windsor Theatre box office, at 364-2234. Space is limited, and reservations cannot be guaranteed past 7:30 p.m. the night of the show.
